My Thoughts on House Dad’s Literary Life
"House Dad's Literary Life" is quite the ride! I dove into this web novel with a mix of curiosity and caution, given the somewhat polarized opinions surrounding it. I'll be honest, it took me a little while to really figure out how I felt about it.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: an ex-assassin transmigrates into the body of a stay-at-home dad with a superstar wife and an adorable daughter. Right off the bat, I could see why some readers might be thrown off. If you're expecting a bloodthirsty killer to suddenly appear in a domestic setting, you're in for a surprise. The MC's transition is more about embracing a new, gentler life, which is a core element of the story.
What Works Well
What really hooked me was the heartwarming dynamic between the MC, Yang Yi, and his daughter, Xixi. Their interactions are genuinely cute and feel very authentic. I found myself invested in their daily lives, from the stories he tells her to the lunches he prepares for her schoolmates. The slice-of-life aspects are definitely the strongest part of the novel.
I also appreciated the MC's character development. He's not perfect, but he genuinely tries to be a good father and husband. His efforts to adapt to his new role, learn new skills, and support his wife's career are commendable. Plus, the novel avoids the common trope of arrogant young masters and over-the-top face-slapping, which was a refreshing change of pace.
Areas of Concern
One common criticism I encountered was the portrayal of the female lead, Mo Fei. Some found her to be self-centered and difficult to relate to, especially in the early chapters. While I agree that she can be a bit frustrating at times, I also think her initial behavior is understandable, given the circumstances of their relationship.
Another potential issue is the sheer number of things the MC is capable of. He's a skilled cook, a talented writer, a successful businessman, and a doting father, all while maintaining a spotless house and taking care of three cats. It can feel a bit unrealistic at times, but I eventually learned to just roll with it and enjoy the ride.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the MC is essentially plagiarizing content from his previous world, which raises some ethical questions. While he does put his own spin on things, it's still a bit of a gray area. Also, there are some instances of Chinese nationalism, although they are generally kept to a minimum.
Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "House Dad's Literary Life." It's a heartwarming and engaging slice-of-life novel with a unique premise and a cast of lovable characters. While it's not without its flaws, I think the strengths outweigh the weaknesses. If you're looking for a feel-good story about family, love, and personal growth, this one is definitely worth checking out.
