My Thoughts on Godly Stay-Home Dad
"Godly Stay-Home Dad" is quite the mixed bag, but ultimately, I found it to be a worthwhile read, albeit with some caveats. It's a novel that definitely picks up steam as it goes along, transforming from a potentially generic cultivation story into a heart-warming slice-of-life with action and romance sprinkled in.
First Impressions
Initially, I was wary. I noticed some felt the beginning was rough, bordering on cliché with the arrogant young master trope. I can see where they're coming from; the early chapters do lean into familiar territory. However, I'd urge readers to push past that initial impression. Around chapter 30, the story starts to find its footing, and by chapter 150, it really hits its stride.
What Works Well
The core strength of this novel lies in its character development, especially that of Zhang Han, the MC. Watching him evolve from a somewhat detached, powerful immortal into a caring father and husband is genuinely satisfying. The interactions between Zhang Han, his daughter Meng Meng, and his wife Zi Yan are the heart and soul of the story. Meng Meng, in particular, is an absolute scene-stealer; her cuteness is definitely a major draw. I also appreciated the blend of genres. The author manages to weave together elements of romance, action, family, cooking, and even music without making the story feel disjointed. It creates a rich and engaging world that kept me invested. The pacing is generally good, and the story doesn't drag on unnecessarily.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel, I did have some reservations. Some readers found the MC's initial arrogance off-putting, and I can understand that. It takes a while for him to shed his "immortal" mindset and truly connect with the world around him. I also noticed some thought the female lead could be frustrating at times, particularly regarding her career choices. I can see how her unwavering trust in her company, despite their questionable actions, could be a point of contention for some.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
A few reviewers mentioned specific plot points, such as Zhang Han giving songs to other artists or certain antagonists lingering for too long. While these didn't significantly detract from my enjoyment, they are worth noting. Also, the name-changing situation with Meng Meng could be a sensitive topic for some readers.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Godly Stay-Home Dad" is a flawed but ultimately enjoyable novel. If you're looking for a heartwarming story with a blend of genres and are willing to overlook some early-story hiccups and occasional character frustrations, I'd recommend giving it a try. It's a solid 4 out of 5 stars from me.
