My Thoughts on Gourmet Food Supplier
"Gourmet Food Supplier" is a web novel I approached with a mix of curiosity and caution, given its mixed reception. It's a story about Yuan Zhou, who inherits a restaurant and gets a system that promises to turn him into a master chef. It definitely has its moments, but it's not without its flaws.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise. A seemingly ordinary guy suddenly thrust into the world of gourmet cooking with a quirky system guiding him? Sounds like a recipe for some fun. The early chapters focus on Yuan Zhou's interactions with customers, showcasing his initial struggles and the surprised reactions to his exceptional egg-fried rice. It's lighthearted and easy to get into.
What Works Well
The novel shines when it focuses on the food and the customers. The author does a decent job of describing the dishes, making them sound appetizing, even if the descriptions sometimes veer into the realm of the fantastical. More importantly, the customers themselves are often interesting and varied, with their own stories and reasons for visiting Yuan Zhou's restaurant. These side characters add depth to the world and provide a welcome break from the MC's often-static personality. I also found the humor to be enjoyable, especially the interactions between Yuan Zhou and the system, which often trolls him in amusing ways.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the MC himself is a major point of contention. I found him to be somewhat bland and, at times, even unlikeable. His cold demeanor and apparent lack of interest in his customers can be off-putting. While some might see it as part of his charm or a result of the system's restrictions, it often comes across as rudeness. This is further compounded by the slow pacing and lack of overall character development. It felt like the story was stuck in a loop of introducing new dishes, showcasing customer reactions, and dealing with the system's arbitrary rules. The humor can also be a hit or miss, with some finding it funny while others view it as just the MC being a jerk.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
There are spoilers within the user reviews. Some readers have mentioned nationalism within the novel. One reader mentioned an instance where the MC charged someone from another country an insane fee because of currency conversions.
Final Verdict
"Gourmet Food Supplier" is a novel with potential, but it ultimately falls short of being truly great. The food descriptions, the interesting side characters, and the humor are definite positives. However, the bland MC, slow pacing, and lack of character development hold it back. If you're looking for a light, easy read with a focus on food and slice-of-life elements, you might find something to enjoy here. However, if you're expecting a complex plot, compelling characters, or realistic cooking descriptions, you might be disappointed. I give it a 3/5.
