My Thoughts on Black Iron Magician
"Black Iron Magician" is an isekai story that initially hooked me with its premise of a veteran isekai protagonist mentoring a newly summoned girl. While it didn't become my all-time favorite, it offers a refreshing take on familiar tropes, and I found myself enjoying the ride for the most part.
First Impressions
The story plunges you into a world where a class of students is summoned, but our focus quickly shifts to Deris, a man already living in this world. He becomes the mentor to Haruna, a seemingly weak student with hidden potential. This twist on the standard "summoned hero" narrative immediately piqued my interest. The slice-of-life elements blended with action and adventure promised a relaxing yet engaging read.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects is the character dynamic between Deris and Haruna. Their master-disciple relationship is more akin to a father-daughter bond, which I found heartwarming. Haruna's relentless drive to improve and her straightforward personality made her a likable protagonist. I also appreciated that the story avoids the typical harem trope, with Deris already in a committed relationship. The leveling system, based on skill proficiency rather than monster grinding, was also a welcome change of pace, keeping the story moving forward. The action scenes are well-integrated, and the story has a light-hearted feel that makes it a fun read.

I did find the plot to be a bit simplistic at times, leaning more towards power leveling than intricate storytelling. Some may feel that the story lacks serious tension due to the strength of Deris and his love interest, Nell. Nell can be a bit much, with her tsundere tendencies and overwhelming power. Her character could be a turn-off for some readers.
