My Thoughts on GOD
"GOD" is a wild ride, a blend of genres that promises adventure, comedy, and martial arts, with a healthy dose of fantasy thrown in. I went into this novel expecting a fun, lighthearted adventure, and while it delivered on that front for a good portion, it also threw some serious curveballs my way.
First Impressions
Initially, I was charmed by the protagonist. He's a bit of a troll, as one reader pointed out, enjoying collecting "pets" in the form of people and running away from problems. This childish protagonist, coupled with the promise of cute children and a lighthearted tone, had me hooked. The early chapters were filled with humor and the setup for what seemed like a classic adventure story.
What Works Well
The character dynamics are a definite strength. I particularly enjoyed the hints of "overprotective dad moments" from a side character, which added a layer of warmth to the story. The accelerated growth aspect of the protagonist also kept things interesting, as I was always curious to see how he would develop and overcome challenges. The world-building is solid, and the initial blend of comedy and adventure is well-executed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, buckle up because things get a little…intense.
The ending. Oh, the ending. It seems I'm not alone in feeling a bit betrayed by the final arc. The story takes a sharp turn into tragedy, with a high body count that left me reeling. Major characters die, relationships are twisted, and the resolution feels rushed and unsatisfying. The last chapter, in particular, left me with more questions than answers.
Final Verdict
"GOD" is a mixed bag. The first ten novels (of the original edition) are a delightful blend of adventure and humor with charming characters and engaging world-building. However, the ending is a significant letdown, leaving many plot threads unresolved and character arcs incomplete. While the journey is enjoyable for the most part, be prepared for a potentially heartbreaking and confusing conclusion. I'm hoping that the ongoing translation might address some of these issues and provide a more satisfying resolution. As it stands, I'm left with a bittersweet feeling, remembering the good times while still feeling a sting of disappointment.
