My Thoughts on Get to Know Your Ex-Girlfriend
"Get to Know Your Ex-Girlfriend" is quite the ride, blending genres in a way that kept me hooked, even when it stumbled a bit. This yuri QT novel dives headfirst into horror, romance, and a touch of the supernatural, all centered around an MC who's anything but ordinary.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, I was intrigued by the premise. Xin Lan, our MC, is a former general turned villain department specialist, now tasked with taking on the role of the ex-girlfriend. Her methods are... unconventional, to say the least. The initial world, a horror-filled survival game set in a high school, immediately throws you into the deep end. I found myself drawn to Xin Lan's cool and domineering personality, and I was eager to see how she'd navigate the challenges ahead.
What Works Well
The strongest aspect of this novel is definitely the MC and FL dynamic. Xin Lan is a force to be reckoned with, and the FL is her equal in every way. Their relationship develops gradually, with the FL falling first, which I always enjoy. The author does a good job of creating suspense and action within each arc, and the world-building is detailed and immersive. I also appreciated the inclusion of Zero Nine, the shut-in AI. Her antics and commentary added a lighthearted touch to the otherwise intense storylines.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the novel overall, there were a few things that held it back from being a perfect read for me. The romance, while sweet, felt somewhat rushed towards the end. I would have liked to see more development and a more satisfying climax to their relationship. The constant framing of the worlds as simulations also cheapened the story a bit for me, taking away some of the emotional weight. I also felt that the novel could have explored the differences between humans and AI in more depth, as it was a missed opportunity to add another layer to the characters and their relationship.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor flaws, "Get to Know Your Ex-Girlfriend" is a solid yuri novel with a unique premise and compelling characters. If you're a fan of cool MCs, strong female leads, and a blend of horror and romance, I'd recommend giving this one a try. Just be prepared for a slightly rushed ending and a few plot points that might not fully land. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
