My Thoughts on Full-time Boyfriend
"Full-time Boyfriend" is a short and sweet yaoi novel that I found to be a pleasant, albeit somewhat uneven, read. It's definitely a quick binge, perfect for when you want something light and fluffy without a ton of angst.
First Impressions
The premise is certainly intriguing: a successful businessman, Yan Yu, hires his former classmate and childhood crush, Chen Yifei, as his assistant. I was immediately drawn to the dynamic between the confident, proactive MC and the more reserved, workaholic ML. The initial chapters had me hooked, eager to see how their relationship would develop.
What Works Well
I really appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama. There's no drawn-out conflict stemming from exes or misunderstandings, which is a refreshing change of pace. The story focuses on the gradual development of their relationship, showcasing how two very different personalities learn to understand and support each other. I also found the MC, Yan Yu, to be incredibly likeable. His forwardness and open communication style made him easy to root for, and I enjoyed seeing him chase after Chen Yifei. The side couples added a nice touch, especially the ex-boyfriend and college friend pairing, which I found surprisingly charming. The smut scenes were also a definite plus, adding a bit of spice to the otherwise sweet narrative.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did have a few reservations. I personally struggled to connect with the ML, Chen Yifei. His cold and pragmatic approach to love sometimes made it feel like Yan Yu was more invested in the relationship than he was. I also felt that the story could have benefited from a bit more depth, particularly in exploring Chen Yifei's emotions and motivations. The fact that the ML had previous relationships was a bit of a turn-off, as it took away from the 'perfect love' fantasy.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might be sensitive to the discussion of past relationships and sexual experiences. There are also some references to the ML gaining experience from his ex, which might not sit well with everyone. The first time they have sex is in chapter 14.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Full-time Boyfriend" is a cute and enjoyable read. If you're looking for a low-angst, fluffy romance with a proactive MC and are okay with a slightly cold ML, then I'd recommend giving it a try. Just be aware that it might not be the most emotionally resonant story out there, but it's still a worthwhile way to spend a few hours. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
