My Thoughts on Former Cannon Fodder’s Self-help Manual
"Former Cannon Fodder’s Self-help Manual" sounded like a fun, quirky read, and after diving in, I definitely have some thoughts. The premise of a female protagonist navigating different worlds to avoid becoming cannon fodder in yuri relationships is intriguing, and I was eager to see how it played out.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The first arc is hilarious and well-written. I found myself enjoying the humor and the unique take on the GL genre. The story definitely grabbed my attention right from the start.
What Works Well
The humor is definitely a strong point. The author infuses a lot of wit and funny situations, making it a refreshing read. The dynamic between the MC and FL in some of the arcs is also quite compelling, and I found myself rooting for them. The concept of interdimensional travel and the different scenarios the MC faces kept things interesting, and I was constantly curious about what would happen next.
Areas of Concern
However, the novel does have its drawbacks. The pacing can be inconsistent, with some arcs feeling too long while others are rushed. I also felt that the MC's characterization could be improved. While she's supposed to be a "self-help" expert, she sometimes relies too heavily on the FL to solve her problems, which diminishes her agency. Some of the plot developments and character actions felt a bit out of place.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find certain plot elements off-putting. The last arc, in particular, could be divisive due to the nature of the relationship dynamics.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Former Cannon Fodder’s Self-help Manual" is a mixed bag. While it has moments of brilliance and offers a refreshing take on the yuri genre with its humor and unique premise, it also suffers from pacing issues and inconsistent character development. If you're looking for a lighthearted and funny read and don't mind some flaws, this might be worth checking out. However, be prepared for some potentially frustrating moments along the way. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
