My Thoughts on Fate/Apocrypha
Fate/Apocrypha throws you headfirst into an alternate Fate universe, and honestly, it's a wild ride. The premise alone – a massive 7 vs. 7 Grail War – hooked me immediately. It’s definitely a "more is more" kind of story, and that’s part of its charm.
First Impressions
Initially, I was really excited by the sheer scale of the conflict and the promise of so many Servants clashing. The idea of two factions, Black and Red, battling it out for the Holy Grail felt like a fantastic twist on the familiar Fate formula. The early chapters really delivered on that potential, introducing a diverse cast of characters and hinting at the complex relationships that would develop.
What Works Well
The action is undeniably a major draw. The fights are bombastic, filled with over-the-top powers and creative uses of Noble Phantasms. The story does a solid job of subverting expectations, particularly with some of the foreshadowed deaths, which kept me on my toes. The Black faction's Masters are a standout, forming a compelling group with their own motivations and backstories. And let's be honest, Astolfo absolutely steals the show. The character design is fantastic, and their personality is just infectious.
Areas of Concern
I did find myself a bit underwhelmed by the protagonist. While initially sympathetic, they tend to fall into the trap of relying on convenient plot devices, which can be a little frustrating. With such a large cast, it's almost inevitable that some characters get sidelined, and I felt that some Servants with really cool abilities didn't get the screen time they deserved. The Red faction's Masters, aside from the mastermind and a rogue mercenary, felt underdeveloped, which made them seem more like generic antagonists.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The ending... well, let's just say it's divisive. It takes a sharp turn into some pretty insane territory, and I can see why some readers might find it jarring.
Final Verdict
Overall, I had a lot of fun with Fate/Apocrypha. If you're a fan of the Fate universe and you're looking for something over-the-top, action-packed, and a little bit cheesy, this is definitely worth checking out. Just be prepared for a protagonist who might not be the most compelling and an ending that goes completely off the rails. But hey, sometimes a little chaos is part of the fun!
