My Thoughts on Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful
"Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful" promised a lighthearted romp through ancient China with a transmigration twist and a healthy dose of shounen ai. Having finished it, I can say it mostly delivers on that promise, though not without a few stumbles along the way. It's a fun ride, but be prepared for some potentially irritating humor and a slightly uneven plot.
First Impressions
Initially, I wasn't entirely sold. The humor is very slapstick and relies heavily on misunderstandings and pranks. I can see how some readers might find the early chapters, where the male lead (ML) is constantly teasing and "bullying" the main character (MC), a bit much. I was definitely on the fence. It felt like the MC was constantly being put at a disadvantage, and that's not always my cup of tea.
What Works Well
However, I stuck with it, and I'm glad I did. The strength of this novel lies in its comedy and the gradual development of the central relationship. The author does a great job of showing how Qin Shaoyu and Shen Qianling, this initially reluctant couple, grow to genuinely care for each other. Their interactions become less about one-sided pranks and more about mutual affection and silliness. I also appreciated the world-building, which felt more realistic than your typical wuxia novel. No one is overpowered, and characters rely on each other's strengths. The side characters, especially the dark guards, were a hilarious addition and brought a lot of life to the story.
Areas of Concern
The humor, while a major selling point for many, might not be for everyone. It can be repetitive and, at times, a little cringy. Also, I felt the plot became a bit diluted in the later arcs. While the side romances were cute, they took away from the main couple's story, and the MC seemed to fade into the background.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out the MC's perceived weakness and naivete. While I understand the frustration, I think it's important to remember that he's a modern-day celebrity thrust into a completely foreign and dangerous world. It's understandable that he'd rely on others and make mistakes. Also, some found the ML's initial behavior problematic, bordering on non-consensual.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Everywhere in Jianghu is Wonderful" is an enjoyable, lighthearted read, perfect if you're looking for something silly and heartwarming. Just be prepared for some over-the-top humor and a plot that occasionally meanders. If you can embrace the absurdity, you'll likely find yourself charmed by this idiot couple and their chaotic adventures. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
