My Thoughts on Everyone is Secretly in Love with Me
"Everyone is Secretly in Love with Me" is a wild ride of cultivation, comedy, and romance that definitely left me with a lot to think about. With its blend of xianxia and yaoi, it's a unique story that tries to balance a lighthearted premise with deeper themes.
First Impressions
The initial setup is definitely intriguing. Lin ZhiZhi, our MC, finds himself burdened with a favorability system, which forces him to navigate unwanted attention. I was immediately drawn in by the idea of a cold, aloof protagonist trying to maintain his distance while everyone around him falls head over heels. The humor is definitely present early on, and I appreciated the lighthearted approach to what could have been a very serious situation.
What Works Well
The novel really shines when it focuses on the individual personalities of the love interests. Each one is distinct, with their own quirks and motivations. I also found the protagonist's struggle to maintain his aloofness quite entertaining. Despite the initial comedy, the story does explore deeper themes of love, identity, and the nature of reality. The writing style is also quite accessible, making it an easy and enjoyable read.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, let's talk about the ending. Major spoilers ahead! The big reveal that the love interests are >!actually different aspects of the same entity!< is definitely divisive. While some might find it a clever twist, others might find it frustrating, feeling that it negates the individual relationships that were built throughout the story. I can see both sides of the argument. On one hand, it's a creative way to resolve the "harem" situation. On the other, it does diminish the importance of those individual connections.
Areas of Concern
I do have to admit that the ending, while unique, left me feeling a bit conflicted. I understand the author's intent, but I can't help but feel that it sacrifices some of the emotional investment in the individual characters. Also, some readers might be put off by instances of dubcon.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Everyone is Secretly in Love with Me" is an enjoyable read, especially if you're looking for something lighthearted with a unique twist. Just be aware that the ending might not be for everyone, and there are some elements that could be potentially triggering. Despite its flaws, it's a story that I found myself thinking about long after I finished reading. I'd recommend giving it a try if you're in the mood for something different.
