My Thoughts on Earned Favors
"Earned Favors" is definitely not for the faint of heart. This novel plunges headfirst into a world of angst, abuse, and complex relationships, and it doesn't pull any punches. After diving in, I can see why it elicits such strong reactions from readers.
First Impressions
My initial impression was one of slight trepidation, given the sheer number of trigger warnings associated with this story. Rape, non-consensual situations, imprisonment—it's all here. This isn't a light, fluffy read; it's a deep dive into the darker side of human relationships.
What Works Well
For those who enjoy angsty narratives, "Earned Favors" seems to deliver in spades. The plot is packed with twists and turns, misunderstandings, and deeply flawed characters. I can appreciate how the author leans into the "dog blood" clichés, creating a story that's both over-the-top and strangely compelling. The intensity of the emotions, the selfish desires, and the constant push and pull between the main characters creates a truly memorable, albeit disturbing, experience. The central relationship between the main character (MC) and the male lead (ML) is undeniably problematic. The ML subjects the MC to horrific abuse, and the fact that the MC ultimately accepts him is something I personally struggled with. The Stockholm syndrome element is strong, and it might be difficult for some readers to stomach. The lack of adequate consequences for the ML's actions is also a significant point of contention.
