My Thoughts on Drop!! ~A Tale of the Fragrance Princess~ (LN)
First Impressions
"Drop!! ~A Tale of the Fragrance Princess~" initially charmed me with its promise of a cute, shoujo-esque isekai story. The premise – a reincarnated noble villainess determined to avoid her doom by focusing on perfume and cosmetics – is certainly intriguing. I was ready for a lighthearted read filled with fluffy romance and delightful crafting details. And while parts of it delivered, my overall experience was a bit more mixed.
What Works Well
Cordelia, the main character, is a definite highlight. I found her dedication to learning and developing her skills genuinely engaging. The novel shines when it delves into the specifics of her fragrance research and business planning. It's refreshing to see a protagonist who isn't instantly overpowered but works diligently to achieve her goals. The world-building, particularly the details about noble society and the properties of various plants, added a layer of depth that I appreciated. Also, the slow-burn romance, while not always in the forefront, has its moments of sweetness and anticipation. The translation quality has been praised, making for a smooth and enjoyable reading experience. The side characters also add a lot to the story, with their unique personalities.
Areas of Concern
However, "Drop!!" isn't without its flaws. The pacing, at times, felt incredibly slow, with some volumes dragging on with seemingly unnecessary side plots. The romance, while cute, is a slow burn that may not satisfy readers craving more immediate romantic developments. Some plot points feel forced or underdeveloped, and the MC's avoidance of the prince can become frustrating. Also, some readers may be disappointed that the FL's family situation remains unresolved.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed disappointment with the ending, feeling that it was rushed and left several loose ends. The relationship between the MC and her parents is unresolved by the end of the story. The development of the MC and ML's relationship after she finds out his identity is too fast and rushed for many readers.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Drop!! ~A Tale of the Fragrance Princess~" is a decent read, particularly if you enjoy slow-paced, slice-of-life stories with a focus on crafting and business management. However, be prepared for a slow burn, some uneven pacing, and a potentially unsatisfying ending. I'd recommend it with the caveat that it's best suited for readers who appreciate the journey more than a perfectly executed destination.
