My Thoughts on Dimension Wave (WN)
Dimension Wave (WN) is a web novel that initially hooked me with its unique premise of an MC addicted to fishing in a VRMMORPG. The idea of exploring the vast ocean and uncovering its secrets was definitely appealing, especially since naval settings aren't too common in this genre. However, as I delved deeper, some aspects started to feel a little less polished than I'd hoped.
First Impressions
The beginning was strong. I was immediately drawn to the chill atmosphere and the focus on fishing. The author clearly understands MMO mechanics, and the world felt believable in that sense. The core concept of the game itself, where one day in real life translates to several years in-game, is a pretty clever way to bypass the usual real-life distractions that plague many VRMMORPG stories.
What Works Well
I appreciated the balance between slice-of-life elements and the more action-oriented aspects. It wasn't just a constant grind or a ruthless power fantasy, but a mix of exploration, crafting, and social interaction. The characters also felt relatively realistic, and I found myself invested in their development, even if they could be a little inconsistent.
Areas of Concern
One of my biggest concerns stems from the gender bender aspect. The MC's transformation into a loli felt somewhat pointless and didn't seem to add anything significant to the story. It's a shame, because the premise had potential, but the execution just didn't land for me. Also, while I enjoyed the initial focus on fishing, I felt the story started to become more generic later on, falling into familiar patterns of monster grinding and resource gathering. The MC's priorities also felt inconsistent at times, swinging between fishing and friendships.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers mentioned specific plot points that disrupt the balance between the MC's interests, such as being summoned to a deserted island with blocked communication. I won't delve into specifics to avoid spoiling anyone, but it's worth noting that these events can impact the overall flow of the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, Dimension Wave (WN) is a decent read with some interesting ideas. The unique setting and focus on exploration are definite strengths. However, the inconsistent character motivations and the underutilized gender bender element hold it back from reaching its full potential. If you're looking for a VRMMORPG with a chill vibe and aren't too bothered by some genre tropes, this might be worth checking out. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
