My Thoughts on Dating the Strongest Boss
"Dating the Strongest Boss" is a completed web novel that dives headfirst into a blend of adventure, drama, horror, romance, and the supernatural, with a healthy dose of yaoi. With tags like "devoted love interests" and "male yandere," I was intrigued, but ultimately left with mixed feelings. While it offers some captivating moments, it also stumbles in areas that left me wanting more.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the premise. The idea of episodic arcs where the MC and ML navigate different horror-themed worlds sounded like a thrilling ride. However, as I delved deeper, I found the transitions between arcs jarring. The lack of exposition between worlds made it feel like I was reading a collection of loosely connected short stories rather than a cohesive novel.
What Works Well
The most consistently praised aspect of this novel is the ML. Readers seem to love his possessive and obsessive nature, finding his devotion to the MC admirable, even sexy. The romance, although twisted, has a certain appeal, especially for those who enjoy a supernatural, eerie, and intense love story between a human and a ghost. Some of the individual arcs, like the Death arc and Demon Tree arc, stood out for their interesting plots and the MC's moments of initiative. The translation is also generally well-regarded, making the story accessible despite the complexities.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, several issues detracted from my overall enjoyment. The MC's passivity was a recurring complaint. In many arcs, he felt like a bystander, overly reliant on the ML to drive the plot forward. This lack of agency made it difficult to connect with him. The repetitive nature of the arcs also became tiresome, with many following a similar formula. The sudden scene changes and timeline shifts without clear indication added to the confusion, especially when trying to follow the story. Also, the plot is full of holes, and the world jumping is pointless and senseless.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed concern over a particular arc where a character's death is seemingly justified due to having an abortion. I understand how this could be deeply problematic and offensive, and it's something to be aware of before diving into the story.
Final Verdict
"Dating the Strongest Boss" is a novel with a strong, dedicated fanbase, but it's not without its flaws. If you're a fan of yandere MLs, dark romance, and episodic horror stories, you might find something to enjoy here. However, be prepared for a potentially confusing plot, a passive MC, and some controversial themes. Ultimately, it's a mixed bag, and your mileage may vary.
