My Thoughts on Cultivation Is Nothing But Money-Grabbing!
This web novel definitely grabbed my attention with its cheeky title, and after diving in, I can see why it has a solid overall rating. It's a fun ride, but it's not without its bumps.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked by the premise: a reborn cultivator, now dirt poor, clawing her way back to power through any means necessary. The "money-grubbing" aspect is definitely a core theme, and it's entertaining to watch the main character, Lian Mu, prioritize wealth as a means to an end. I can see how some might find similarities to other novels like "Smash all Pots and Pans to go to School", with the scrappy protagonist juggling multiple hustles.
What Works Well
The author creates a world where cultivation isn't just about talent, it's about resources. Lian Mu's resourcefulness and willingness to learn alchemy and weapon-making are engaging. Her focus on self-reliance, driven by her poverty, makes her a compelling character. I also appreciated the reversed gender roles in the romance. The male lead is a gentle, almost "cabbage-like" character, which is a refreshing change from the typical cold and domineering male leads often found in xianxia novels. The humor throughout the story is well-placed, adding a lighthearted touch to the more serious aspects of Lian Mu's journey.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall story, I did find some aspects a little inconsistent. At times, Lian Mu's dedication to sword cultivation seemed to take a backseat to her money-making ventures. Also, the cultivation system itself could have been fleshed out more. There wasn't much information on realms or complex cultivation details. Furthermore, the ending feels rushed, leaving some plot threads unresolved and feeling unsatisfactory.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
The following contains minor spoilers about the romantic subplot and some character reveals.
One of the biggest reveals is that the male lead, Ying You, is actually the reincarnation of Lian Mu's sword from her previous life. This adds a unique layer to their relationship.
Final Verdict
"Cultivation Is Nothing But Money-Grabbing!" is an enjoyable read, especially if you're looking for a xianxia novel with a strong female lead and a healthy dose of humor. While it has its flaws, the unique premise and engaging characters make it worth checking out. Just be prepared for a slightly abrupt ending. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
