My Thoughts on Chasing Summer
"Chasing Summer" promised a sweet escape to simpler times, and for the most part, it delivered. As a sucker for childhood friend romances, I was eager to dive in and see if it lived up to the hype.
First Impressions
The initial chapters drew me in with the familiar trope of bickering childhood companions. Lin Zhexia and Chi Yao have that classic dynamic, trading barbs while secretly caring for each other. I could see the groundwork being laid for a slow-burn romance, which is often my favorite kind. However, I also felt a slight sense of déjà vu. The setup felt reminiscent of many classic BG (romance) Chinese high school stories.
What Works Well
The heart of this novel lies in the relationship development between Lin Zhexia and Chi Yao. The author does a great job of showcasing the subtle ways they've admired each other over the years. Chi Yao's unwavering support and quiet attentiveness toward Lin Zhexia make him truly boyfriend material. I especially appreciated how the author portrayed Lin Zhexia's dawning realization of her feelings for Chi Yao, likening it to drops of seawater converging into a tide. It felt organic and relatable. The story focuses on their day-to-day lives and growth, making it a wholesome and healing read. The chemistry between the leads is undeniable, and I appreciated the lack of unnecessary drama or misunderstandings.
Areas of Concern
While the focus on relationship development is a strength, it also means the plot is relatively simple. If you're looking for a complex or action-packed story, this might not be for you. The "old school" dynamic might not appeal to everyone.
