My Thoughts on Can You Afford To Raise?
"Can You Afford To Raise?" definitely took me on a rollercoaster of emotions, and I can see why it has such a dedicated following. This josei romance explores some interesting dynamics with its 'woman chases man' trope in a modern setting. While it might not be perfect, it's a fun, easy read that I found myself enjoying more than I initially expected.
First Impressions
Okay, I'll admit, the initial setup had me a little hesitant. The female lead, initially reeling from a cheating ex, mistakes the male lead for someone else and decides to… well, "raise" him. It's a bit out there, and some might even find her pursuit a little stalker-ish at first. I wasn't entirely sold, but I decided to stick with it, and I'm glad I did.
What Works Well
What really grabbed me was the character development, especially for the male lead. He starts off cold and aloof, but the author does a great job of revealing the reasons behind his guarded nature. His past is genuinely heartbreaking, and I appreciated that the story explores his issues without excusing any potentially questionable behavior. The female lead is also a breath of fresh air. She's kind and optimistic, but not a pushover. I loved that she knew her worth and wasn't afraid to go after what she wanted, while still maintaining her dignity. I also found the comedic elements surprisingly effective. The initial misunderstanding leads to some genuinely funny situations, and the banter between the leads is often charming and sweet. The role reversal, with the female lead taking the initiative and the male lead gradually warming up, is a refreshing twist on typical romance tropes.
Areas of Concern
I do think the story has some flaws. The translation quality seems to be inconsistent, with some sections feeling rough or even missing parts. Also, the initial chapters might be a bit slow for some readers. It takes a while for the romance to really take off, and I can see why some might get impatient.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, heads up, I'm going to touch on a few potential spoilers here. The male lead's initial deception regarding his identity can be a sticking point for some. While I understood his reasons, it did create some unnecessary drama and could be seen as taking advantage of the female lead's feelings. Also, the female lead's family situation, with a difficult stepmother and complicated relationships with her half-siblings, adds some angst to the story.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Can You Afford To Raise?" is a heartwarming and entertaining read. If you're looking for a light, fluffy romance with some interesting character dynamics and a touch of humor, I'd definitely recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for a slightly bumpy start and maybe keep a translation dictionary handy! I'm giving it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
