My Thoughts on Bu ni Mi wo Sasagete Hyaku to Yonen. Elf de Yarinaosu Musha Shugyou (WN)
This web novel, with its rather lengthy title, piqued my interest with its reincarnation premise and martial arts focus. The core idea of a martial arts master getting a second chance in the same world, only to encounter his former disciple, is undeniably intriguing. Overall, it seems to be a fun read for those who enjoy the martial arts genre.
First Impressions
My initial impression, much like others, was positive. The setup is well-executed. The MC's reincarnation is unique because he's reborn into the same world, just years later. This creates a compelling dynamic, especially with the lingering presence of his past life. The early chapters are engaging, drawing you into the MC's journey as he navigates his new existence and grapples with his past.
What Works Well
The focus on pure martial arts is definitely a strong point. It's a refreshing change of pace from the usual power fantasy tropes. The fight scenes are reportedly well-written, and the character interactions, at least initially, are engaging. Many find the premise of the MC interacting with people from his past life, particularly his former disciple, compelling. The blend of action, adventure, and comedy seems to work well, creating a balanced and entertaining experience.
Areas of Concern
While the initial premise is strong, some readers found that the story loses its way as it progresses. The plot can become aimless. While the fights are enjoyable, they can become repetitive if they're the only focus. Character development, aside from the MC, appears to be lacking. The romance, while present, is slow-paced and underdeveloped, leaving some readers wanting more depth in the relationships. The MC's single-minded focus on martial arts, while initially appealing, can also become a drawback for some, making him seem like a "battle junky thug" with no higher purpose.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviews mention that the MC has to hide his identity from his former disciple, which leads to a "double life" scenario. The disciple, still harboring feelings for her master, creates a slightly uncomfortable dynamic. If you're sensitive to potentially "creepy" relationships, this is something to be aware of.
Final Verdict
"Bu ni Mi wo Sasagete Hyaku to Yonen" has a lot of potential, and the early chapters are definitely worth a read if you're a fan of martial arts novels with a reincarnation twist. However, be aware that the story may lose focus as it progresses, and the character development and romance may not be as fleshed out as you'd like. Despite these concerns, I'd still recommend giving it a try, especially if you're looking for a lighthearted and action-packed read.
