My Thoughts on Breaking Off the Engagement… Bring it on!
"Breaking Off the Engagement… Bring it on!" certainly has an intriguing title. The premise of a woman cheerfully accepting her broken engagement immediately grabbed my attention, and I was eager to see how the story would unfold. However, after delving into the available chapters, my feelings are a bit mixed.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the potential for a refreshing take on the genre. The idea of a female lead who isn't devastated by a broken engagement felt empowering. The early chapters promised a fun and perhaps even insightful story.
What Works Well
The main character, Ririna/Liliana, seems to be a highlight for many. Her calm demeanor and nonchalant attitude are refreshing. I can see why some readers find her personality appealing, especially her carefree yet caring nature. There's also a certain charm in the over-the-top, almost gag-like situations she finds herself in, with her family and friends being equally "muscle-headed" in their approach to solving problems. The world-building, while perhaps not the primary focus, is done well enough to make the characters feel like real people with believable motivations.
Areas of Concern
However, the story seems to lose its way after the initial premise. The plot becomes disjointed, and the introduction of multiple love interests feels rushed and somewhat forced. Liliana's denseness, while initially amusing, quickly becomes frustrating, as she seems oblivious to the obvious affections of those around her. The misunderstandings pile up, and the lack of clear communication becomes a recurring issue. Furthermore, the plot can feel repetitive, with similar scenarios playing out repeatedly. The shift in focus from monster fighting to ensuring people don't feel unhappy, which apparently creates monsters, also seems to detract from the initial appeal of the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several reviewers have pointed out specific plot points that may be considered spoilers. These include the prince's true feelings and the staged rebellion, which are revealed early in the story. It's worth noting that the abundance of male leads and the protagonist's naivety are also central themes.
Final Verdict
While "Breaking Off the Engagement… Bring it on!" has its moments of charm and a likeable protagonist, the disjointed plot, repetitive scenarios, and frustrating misunderstandings ultimately detract from the overall experience. It starts strong but loses its focus, devolving into a somewhat predictable and less engaging story. It's a lighthearted read, but it may not be for those seeking a more coherent and emotionally resonant narrative.
