My Thoughts on Banished Villainess – Under Observation!
"Banished Villainess – Under Observation!" is a unique spin on the well-trodden villainess trope, and while it had moments that thoroughly entertained me, it also stumbled in ways that left me feeling frustrated. The premise is certainly intriguing: we follow Chloe after her banishment, not directly from her perspective, but through the eyes of those observing her. It's a reality show within a fantasy novel, and that's a fun concept.
First Impressions
The initial chapters hooked me with the mystery surrounding Chloe's behavior post-banishment. Is she truly reformed, or is it all an act? The unique narrative perspective, told from the point of view of the "capture targets" as they literally watch her every move, is fresh and different. This approach definitely sets it apart from other villainess stories where we're usually stuck inside the protagonist's head.
What Works Well
I appreciated the story's willingness to subvert genre tropes. It's not just another reincarnation story where the villainess suddenly becomes the heroine. The pacing, for the most part, kept me engaged, and I was genuinely curious to see how the "capture targets" would react to Chloe's actions. I also enjoyed the slow reveal of Chloe's true character, which kept me guessing.
Areas of Concern
However, I found myself increasingly annoyed with the "capture targets." Their constant negativity and, frankly, disturbing behavior towards Chloe became tiresome. Their black-and-white thinking and the ease with which they jumped to conclusions about her actions made them difficult to root for, and, at times, difficult to even read about. The pacing also falters towards the end, with some feeling that the story drags on longer than necessary. The insertion of side stories also felt disruptive to the main plot.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed concern over the handling of potentially triggering content, specifically the suggestion of sexual assault. While it doesn't occur, the fact that it's even considered by some characters is disturbing and could be a major turn-off for some readers. Also, the redemption arcs for the male leads are quite weak, it's hard to forgive them for their actions.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Banished Villainess – Under Observation!" is a mixed bag. While the unique premise and subversion of tropes are refreshing, the unlikeable characters and pacing issues detract from the overall experience. If you're looking for a light, somewhat mindless read and are willing to overlook some problematic elements, you might enjoy it. However, if you're seeking well-developed characters and a satisfying resolution, you might be left wanting more. I'd give it a cautious recommendation, with the caveat that it's not for everyone.
