My Thoughts on Back to My Dad’s High School Days
"Back to My Dad’s High School Days" took me on a wild ride! The premise alone—a son traveling back in time to become classmates with his parents and play matchmaker—was enough to pique my interest, but the emotional depth and unexpected angst truly hooked me. This isn't just a fluffy time-travel romp; it's a story about family, perspective, and second chances.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the comedic undertones and the MC's antics. He's a fun, vibrant character, and watching him navigate high school alongside his parents is genuinely entertaining. I was expecting a lighthearted story focused on his efforts to bring his parents together, and in the beginning, that's exactly what I got. I was a little worried the MC would fade into the background, especially as the story delved deeper into his parents' lives and relationship, but I was pleasantly surprised by how well the author balanced the different perspectives.
What Works Well
The strength of this novel lies in its exploration of family dynamics and character growth. As the story progresses, we see the MC gain a deeper understanding of his parents, their flaws, and the reasons behind their actions. The author does an excellent job of portraying the complexities of their relationship and the challenges they face. I also found the romance between the parents to be very sweet and well-developed, and I appreciated how the story unfolded from their points of view as well.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, things get heavy. Be warned: the latter half of this novel is intense. The angst hits hard, particularly when the MC experiences the same terminal illness as the original body he inhabits. The emotional impact of these events, especially the parents' reactions, is incredibly moving. It was heartbreaking to see the MC grapple with his past feelings of neglect and the fear of ceasing to exist. The author really pulls no punches here.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that gave me pause was the handling of the "neglect" storyline. I understand the parents' motivations for not drastically altering the past, but it still felt somewhat unsatisfying. It left me with a lingering feeling that they should have apologized more for the MC's childhood experiences. Also, while the ABO world-building was present, it didn't feel fully integrated.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor shortcomings, "Back to My Dad’s High School Days" is a deeply affecting and ultimately uplifting story. The blend of humor, romance, and angst creates a unique and memorable reading experience. I found myself completely invested in the characters and their journey, and I appreciated the author's willingness to explore complex themes with sensitivity and nuance. I walked away with a renewed appreciation for family and the importance of open communication. I'd definitely recommend this one.
