My Thoughts on As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels

"As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels" had a fun premise that initially drew me in, but ultimately left me with mixed feelings. The idea of a straight man forced to play the role of a doomed gay character in various heterosexual romance novels, only to have the male lead fall for him instead, is undeniably amusing. However, the execution stumbled in several areas, preventing me from fully enjoying the experience.

First Impressions

I was immediately intrigued by the concept. The early chapters promised a lighthearted, comedic story with a system-bound protagonist hilariously failing to fulfill his mission. The initial worlds and interactions were entertaining, and I appreciated the translation quality, which made the reading experience smooth.

What Works Well

The initial humor and the premise's novelty are definitely strengths. The slow burn of the MC's feelings towards the ML, as he gradually becomes less "straight" across multiple worlds, felt more believable than the instant conversions often found in similar novels. I also enjoyed the author's exploration of clichés in heterosexual romances, highlighting their inconsistencies and absurdities. Some readers found the character development of the leads compelling, particularly the ML's persistent pursuit of the MC across different worlds.

Areas of Concern

Unfortunately, the story seemed to lose its way as it progressed. The plotlines became repetitive and flat, and I found myself losing interest in the characters. The MC's initial charm faded as he became increasingly frustrating, with some of his actions feeling illogical and inconsistent with his supposed "godlike actor" status. The ML's possessiveness, while initially endearing, eventually crossed the line into being overbearing and controlling, making their relationship feel unbalanced and even abusive at times.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Several reviewers mentioned disturbing content, including the nonchalant use of r*pe and the MC drugging characters to orchestrate an orgy. These elements left a bad taste in my mouth and significantly detracted from my enjoyment of the story. The resolution of the overarching plot and certain character arcs also felt rushed and unsatisfying.

Final Verdict

While "As the Minor Gay Rival in Het Novels" has its moments of humor and a unique premise, the execution ultimately falls short. The inconsistent characterization, repetitive plotlines, and disturbing content prevent me from wholeheartedly recommending it. If you're looking for a lighthearted read with a clever twist, the beginning might be worth checking out, but be prepared for a potential decline in quality as the story progresses.

Synopsis

There are always four kinds of people in the traditional Mary Sue world. The Male Lead, the Mary Sue female lead, the woman who never wanted to see the female protagonist live a good life, and the infatuated man willing to destroy heaven and earth to get the female lead. However, with the rapid expansion of the army of rotten women, there is also a growing type of character, and that is a man who is also infatuated with the male lead… This character is referred to as the gay guy. They share the same infatuation as the second man, also has a tragic end and works together in hindering the male and female protagonist’s love. Fan Yuan has walked in every time and space playing as the gay man. He had always enjoyed it, until one day, with superb acting, he made the male lead bent… o (╯-╰) o Fan Yuan (affectionate confession): “I do not want to be your brother, in fact, I have always loved you.” Someone (fondly looking back): “Me too.” Fan Yuan (⊙_⊙): “…” You’ve got the wrong line, bro!
