My Thoughts on An Ordinary Beta
"An Ordinary Beta" promised a whirlwind of tropes and a dash of the dramatic, and honestly, it delivered on that promise in spades. This omegaverse story, with its hints of yandere and obsessive love, proved to be a quick and entertaining read, even if it wasn't without its quirks.
First Impressions
Going in, I was a little apprehensive. The tags screamed "potential train wreck," but I'm a sucker for a good (or even slightly unhinged) romance. The fact that it was a completed short story definitely piqued my interest, promising a contained narrative without endless filler.
What Works Well
The pacing is definitely a strong point. Because it's short, the story moves quickly, and I appreciated that it didn't drag. The male lead is certainly... something. He's described as manipulative and possessive, even a "lunatic," and there's a definite intensity to his actions. Yet, I found myself strangely drawn to his character. He has his limits, and the story manages to avoid venturing into truly dark territory, which I was relieved by. I also really enjoyed the main character's realistic reactions. He's not overly cunning or brilliant, but he's grounded and accepts the male lead with all his flaws.
Areas of Concern
While the fast pace is generally a positive, it does come at the expense of deeper development. The story felt somewhat rushed. It feels like the author tried to cram in every possible trope they could think of, and the romance felt a little unsatisfying at times.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers mentioned that the ML planned "fateful" encounters and acted pitiful to get the MC's attention. It's also revealed that the ML takes steps to deal with his father, though this is not fully explored in the story.
Final Verdict
Overall, I enjoyed "An Ordinary Beta" for what it is: a fast-paced, trope-filled romance with a slightly unhinged but ultimately loving male lead. It's not a deeply complex story, but it's entertaining and a good choice if you're looking for a quick read with a bit of spice. I'd recommend it if you're a fan of the omegaverse genre and don't mind a bit of yandere flavor. Just be prepared for a rollercoaster ride and a story that doesn't always delve as deeply as it could.
