My Thoughts on An Expert Is actually By My Side
"An Expert Is Actually By My Side" is a unique read that certainly kept me entertained, even if it wasn't perfect. Blending school life with sci-fi elements is always a bold move, and while the execution has some stumbles, the overall experience was enjoyable.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed my attention: a protagonist with a mysterious past navigating modern life with overpowered abilities thanks to some kind of system. It's a formula that, when done right, can be incredibly compelling. The slice-of-life aspect, combined with the promise of a romantic subplot, made me eager to dive in.
What Works Well
I really appreciated the originality of the story. It definitely stands out from the crowd. The interactions between the main character and the supporting cast are a highlight. There's a certain charm to the way he navigates relationships, even if his understanding of the world sometimes feels a little… off. The humor landed well for me, providing consistent levity throughout the story. The business management aspect was also interesting, adding another layer to the narrative beyond the school setting and romantic elements.
Areas of Concern
The ending, unfortunately, seems to be a point of contention. I can definitely see where the complaints are coming from. It felt rushed, with a significant time skip that left me wanting more closure. Many side characters, who were well-developed and engaging earlier in the story, seemed to fade into the background. I was left wondering about the fates of characters like Su Girl, Poisonous Milk Xiang, and even President Lin. The romantic subplot, while present, felt somewhat underdeveloped, especially towards the end. The hookup happening in the last chapter felt abrupt. Finally, the mystery surrounding Hao Yun's past never really got the attention it deserved, leaving me with unanswered questions.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, this is where I'm going to briefly touch on something that could spoil the ending for you, so skip this paragraph if you want to remain completely in the dark! Apparently, Professor Lu Zhou makes an appearance at the end, which hyped some readers. However, this reveal seems to be part of the rushed ending that many found disappointing.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "An Expert Is Actually By My Side" is a novel I would still recommend, but with reservations. If you're looking for something original, funny, and engaging, this might be up your alley. However, be prepared for a potentially rushed ending and some lingering questions. The unique blend of genres and the charming character interactions make it a worthwhile read, even if the world-building could use some work. I'd give it a solid 3 out of 5 stars.
