My Thoughts on Agreement Mark
"Agreement Mark" promised a sweet school-life romance with a touch of ABO spice, and honestly, it delivered in a way that completely charmed me. I went in expecting typical tropes, but I found a story with surprising depth and characters I genuinely cared about.
First Impressions
Initially, I was a bit wary. The "cold MC" archetype can be hit or miss for me, but Shen Jin quickly won me over. His initial aloofness is a direct result of his difficult past, and watching him slowly open up and accept warmth from others was incredibly rewarding. The "domineering ML" trope also gave me pause, but He Zhao is surprisingly respectful and attentive, which was a refreshing twist.
What Works Well
The heart of this story lies in its characters and their relationships. The dynamic between Shen Jin and He Zhao is beautifully developed, built on mutual respect and genuine affection. He Zhao's unwavering support and care for Shen Jin are incredibly touching, especially considering Shen Jin's emotional scars. I especially loved how the story emphasizes that their connection is based on personality and care, not just pheromone compatibility or visual appeal.
The author also does a great job of creating nuanced characters. Even the "antagonists," like the original protagonist and Shen Jin's parents, aren't simply villains. They're flawed individuals who are given the opportunity to learn and grow, largely due to Shen Jin's influence. The family dynamics, especially Shen Jin's relationships with his younger brother and older cousin, added another layer of depth to the story.
Areas of Concern
The only real drawback for me was the somewhat stereotypical portrayal of genders within the ABO setting. While the story does touch on themes of courage and breaking free from gender norms, some aspects, like the existence of bridal classes for omegas, felt a bit outdated. However, this didn't detract too much from my overall enjoyment of the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
A few readers pointed out a specific moment in the novel where the rival suggests betting on Shen Jin, and He Zhao firmly refuses, stating that he is not property. This small scene speaks volumes about He Zhao's character and his respect for Shen Jin's autonomy. Additionally, the transformation of Shen Jin's brother into an Alpha was a point of contention for some, but others viewed it as a positive outcome, allowing him to embrace his true self.
Final Verdict
Despite a few minor quibbles, "Agreement Mark" is a genuinely heartwarming and satisfying read. It's a sweet and subtle romance with well-developed characters, a healthy relationship dynamic, and a touch of spice. If you're looking for a school-life romance that goes beyond the surface level and explores themes of healing, acceptance, and the power of human connection, I highly recommend giving this one a try.
