My Thoughts on After Waking up Beside the Villain
"After Waking up Beside the Villain" is quite a ride! This novel plunges you into a world-hopping adventure with a strong focus on character development and, of course, romance. The premise is intriguing, and while it has some elements that might not be for everyone, it offers a unique experience for those who enjoy the Yaoi genre with a touch of the supernatural.
First Impressions
Initially, I went in expecting a fairly straightforward face-slapping, villain-redemption story. I was pleasantly surprised to discover that it's more complex than it initially appears. The early arcs set the stage, but as the story progresses, the depth of the characters and the overarching plot become more apparent. It definitely grabbed my attention and kept me reading!
What Works Well
The slow-burn romance between the MC and ML is a major highlight. It's not just about surface-level attraction; it explores their evolving connection as they navigate different worlds and situations. I particularly enjoyed how each arc reveals a different facet of the ML, especially when he lets his true, less-than-perfect self shine. The author's world-building skills also improve as the story goes on, creating immersive and engaging settings. I also appreciated how the MC isn't a pushover; he's intelligent, proactive, and dedicated to his goals. The humor is well-done and doesn't feel forced.
Areas of Concern
I will say, some readers may find the initial premise difficult to swallow. The story starts with a non-con situation in the first arc. Some arcs can feel a bit lengthy, and keeping track of all the names and details across the different worlds can be challenging. Also, with so much world-hopping, some inconsistencies can crop up.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some of the reviews mention that the MC and ML knew each other and liked each other before the events of the story. The early arcs contain sensitive content that may be triggering for some readers.
Final Verdict
Despite some potential drawbacks, "After Waking up Beside the Villain" is a worthwhile read if you're looking for a novel with intriguing characters, a complex plot, and a unique take on the world-hopping genre. While I can understand why some readers might drop it due to certain plot elements or pacing issues, I ultimately found it to be a satisfying and entertaining experience. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
