My Thoughts on Aesthetic Formula
"Aesthetic Formula" promised a modern, adult romance, and for the most part, it delivered. I went in expecting a fluffy boss-subordinate story, and while it has those elements, it also explores themes of personal growth and overcoming past hurts. The dynamic between the leads is definitely the driving force here, and I can see why it's garnered such a dedicated following.
First Impressions
The initial setup is fairly classic: a hardworking, somewhat jaded assistant and his seemingly carefree, playboy boss. The story kicks off with a one-night stand after the MC discovers his boyfriend cheating, and the ML is reeling from a professional setback. I was immediately intrigued by the potential for both characters to grow and change. However, I will admit that the beginning was a bit rough around the edges.
What Works Well
The main strength of this novel lies in the evolving relationship between Ding Yinan and Huo Zhixiao. I found their banter genuinely amusing, and I appreciated how the author explored their intimacy. There's a certain "dog with black cat" energy to their dynamic, and I enjoyed seeing them navigate their feelings for each other. Many readers praised the MC's personality, describing him as a "power bottom" who's both capable and amusingly exasperated by his boss's antics. The story shines in portraying their individual growth, especially the ML's journey from a suppressed artist to someone who embraces his own creativity. The side characters, like the ML's sister, add humor and depth to the narrative.

I can see why some readers had issues with the early interactions between the leads. The ML's initial behavior definitely toes the line of harassment, with instances of him being pushy and not respecting the MC's boundaries. While the ML does undergo character development, I understand why some readers found it difficult to look past his early actions. It's important to note that these concerns seem to lessen as the story progresses, but they are definitely present in the first half.
