My Thoughts on A Nest of Snakes Inside an Old Tomb
"A Nest of Snakes Inside an Old Tomb" promised a fluffy, comedic escape, and for the most part, it delivered. It's a complete original novel with a translation ongoing, so I decided to give it a try. The premise alone—a human reincarnated as a snake in a fantasy world—was enough to pique my interest, and the tags (comedy, yaoi, slice of life) sealed the deal.
First Impressions
The initial chapters were undeniably cute and funny, especially the MC's interactions with his snake family. There's a certain charm in seeing a former human navigate life as a baby snake, complete with all the awkwardness and fish-out-of-water moments you'd expect. The breaking of the fourth wall was used for comedic purposes, and the humor certainly landed with me.
What Works Well
The world-building is surprisingly well-done. The author has created a unique world with supernatural beasts, ancient tombs, and intriguing folklore. The romance between the MC and the ML, a noble black snake, is a definite highlight. The ML's doting nature and the way he pampers the MC is a recurring theme, and it provides a lot of the story's sweetness. I also enjoyed how the author explored the unique aspects of snake life, from their perspectives on family to their interactions with humans. The tomb raiding arc adds a layer of mystery and adventure that keeps the story from becoming too repetitive.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue I had was with the MC's personality. While some found his childishness endearing, I found him to be selfish, lazy, and sometimes downright annoying. His lack of responsibility and his tendency to take advantage of the ML's affections were frustrating. It felt like the ML deserved someone better. This lack of character development in the MC hindered my enjoyment of the story.
