My Thoughts on 80s Wife Is Sweet and Sassy
This novel took me on a wild ride through the 80s, filled with family drama, budding romance, and a healthy dose of revenge. While it wasn't perfect, I found myself surprisingly invested in Chu Qiao's journey.
First Impressions
The premise is familiar: a woman reborn with a second chance to rewrite her life. Chu Qiao, armed with memories of a painful past, is determined to escape a miserable marriage and carve out her own destiny. Initially, I was drawn to the idea of a strong female lead navigating the challenges of the era, but I was also a little wary of potential pitfalls.
What Works Well
I appreciated the fast-paced plot and the satisfying "face-slapping" moments as Chu Qiao outsmarted her enemies. The character development, while sometimes a bit inconsistent, kept me engaged. I particularly enjoyed watching her build a business empire and find genuine happiness. The romance with Gu Ye, while not the central focus, was sweet and supportive. I also found myself invested in the side characters, such as Chu Peng, the FL's brother, who, despite his flaws, added depth to the story.
Areas of Concern
However, there were some aspects of the novel that gave me pause. I found the portrayal of certain social issues, such as marital abuse and exploitation, to be somewhat glossed over. Also, the FL's family dynamic was, at times, exhausting. The constant scheming and infighting could be overwhelming, and I wished the author had explored these relationships with more nuance. Some found the FL to be a bit too perfect, with success and skills falling into her lap a little too easily. The lack of depth in the ML was also a common concern.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out plot holes, such as the FL's dramatic personality shift after rebirth and the lack of questions surrounding her newfound musical abilities. The casual treatment of drugging and other harmful acts also raised some red flags.
Final Verdict
Overall, "80s Wife Is Sweet and Sassy" is an entertaining read if you're looking for a lighthearted story with a strong female lead and satisfying revenge. However, be prepared for some problematic tropes and a bit of over-the-top drama. I'd recommend it as a fun, escapist read, but not necessarily a deeply thought-provoking one.
