My Thoughts on Wilderness Vegetation
"Wilderness Vegetation" is a completed original BL novel that I recently finished, and it's definitely a story that sticks with you. With a solid 4.1/5 rating, it's clear many readers have found something to enjoy here. As someone who enjoys a good angst-filled romance, I was intrigued by the "wife-chasing crematorium" tag. However, I walked away with some mixed feelings.
First Impressions
The premise is classic crematorium: a cold gong, a devoted shou, misunderstandings galore, and a relationship that seems doomed from the start. The initial setup definitely hooked me, and I was eager to see how the characters would navigate their complex dynamic. I found myself quickly invested in seeing how the characters would develop, and how the central conflict would play out.
What Works Well
The emotional weight of the story is undeniable. Many readers praised the author's ability to create a bittersweet narrative that explores themes of forgiveness, healing, and second chances. The angst is palpable, and the groveling from the ML is satisfyingly intense. I found myself sympathizing with both leads, even when their actions were frustrating. The characters felt grounded and human, making their struggles all the more impactful. I also really enjoyed the strong bond between the MC and his brother, which added a heartwarming element to the story. The translation is also excellent, which greatly enhanced my reading experience.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed many aspects of "Wilderness Vegetation," I did have some reservations. The central conflict stems from a significant misunderstanding, and I felt that the lack of communication between the characters was a major source of frustration. Sometimes, the characters' actions felt illogical, and I struggled to fully understand their motivations. This disconnect made it difficult for me to fully invest in their relationship. The side characters, while present, felt underdeveloped and more like plot devices than fully realized individuals. The second half of the novel felt less engaging than the first, with too much focus on external factors.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers may find the initial misunderstanding between the MC and ML to be contrived or unrealistic. The ML's cold behavior stems from his belief that the MC drugged him, while the MC was actually trying to prevent another character from being taken advantage of. This misunderstanding, which lasts for years, is a major source of conflict and may be off-putting for some readers.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found "Wilderness Vegetation" to be a worthwhile read, especially if you're a fan of the wife-chasing crematorium trope. While it has its flaws, the emotional depth and satisfying grovel make it a compelling story. Just be prepared for some frustrating miscommunications and a healthy dose of angst!
