My Thoughts on How to Deal with a Tsundere Gong
This novel promised a fluffy romance with a tsundere love interest, but what I got was a rollercoaster of emotions, a frustrating relationship, and a whole lot of drama. "How to Deal with a Tsundere Gong" definitely left an impression, though not always a positive one.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a couple navigating the complexities of a relationship where one partner is emotionally closed off. The first few chapters are certainly gripping. I was immediately sympathetic to the main character (MC) and invested in his journey.
What Works Well
The author excels at portraying the MC's emotions. I felt his heartbreak, his frustration, and his eventual resolve to leave a toxic situation. The writing style, particularly the casual tone from the MC's perspective, adds a layer of depth to the story. The side characters, though sometimes underdeveloped, add to the overall drama. The translation is also well done, making the story flow smoothly.
Areas of Concern
The biggest issue for me, and what seems to be a recurring theme among readers, is the male lead (ML). The "tsundere" label feels inaccurate; he often comes across as simply self-absorbed and emotionally stunted. The lack of communication between the MC and ML is infuriating, and the fact that misunderstandings drag on for seven years strains believability. Furthermore, the ML's friends and family's treatment of the MC adds another layer of frustration. The ending feels rushed, failing to provide a satisfying resolution to the complex issues raised throughout the story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers feel that the ML's actions are justified due to a past betrayal by the MC. However, many find this explanation insufficient to excuse his behavior over the years. The ML's eventual redemption arc feels unearned, and the circumstances surrounding the MC and ML getting back together are contrived.
Final Verdict
"How to Deal with a Tsundere Gong" is a guilty pleasure, a dog-blood drama that will evoke strong emotions. If you're looking for a fluffy romance, this isn't it. However, if you enjoy angst, melodrama, and a frustratingly flawed relationship, then this novel might be worth a read. Just be prepared for a bumpy ride and a less-than-perfect ending. I would recommend going into it with low expectations and embracing the chaos.
