My Thoughts on Why Do All the Male Protagonists Look at Me Like That
Okay, buckle up, because "Why Do All the Male Protagonists Look at Me Like That" is a wild ride. This novel throws you headfirst into a BL version of a reality dating show, and honestly, the premise alone had me hooked. It’s got a calm, caring, and charismatic protagonist, Xingchen, who finds himself transported into a novel where he's supposed to be a side character. His mission? To help the male leads find love. The problem? They're all looking at him.
First Impressions
I jumped in expecting a fluffy, fun read, and for the most part, it delivered. The initial chapters are all about setting the stage, introducing the eight contestants, and establishing Xingchen's role as the well-meaning, slightly oblivious "tool" character. I was immediately drawn to Xingchen's personality – he’s like a mother hen, cooking and cleaning, just trying to keep everyone happy and get his paycheck. What’s not to love?
What Works Well
The character dynamics are definitely a high point. Each of the potential love interests has a distinct personality, and watching them interact, form alliances, and subtly (or not so subtly) sabotage each other is genuinely entertaining. I particularly enjoyed the author's ability to create compelling characters with depth, making them feel like real people with their own motivations and flaws. The slow-burn romance also works well, allowing the relationships to develop naturally over time.
Areas of Concern
Alright, let's address the elephant in the room: the translation. I can't lie, it's rough around the edges. Many readers have pointed out issues with pronoun mix-ups and awkward phrasing, making it difficult to fully immerse yourself in the story. It's a shame because the underlying plot is genuinely engaging, but the translation can be a real barrier. It is very important to consider that this novel may be unenjoyable to you due to the poor translation.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Proceed with caution! Some readers have revealed that the main pairing is with Pei Xu.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Why Do All the Male Protagonists Look at Me Like That" has a certain charm that kept me reading. The engaging plot, well-developed characters, and slow-burn romance make it a worthwhile read, especially if you're a fan of reverse harems and BL. Just be prepared to wade through some translation issues along the way. If you can look past that, you might just find yourself as invested in Xingchen's love life as I am. I give it a tentative 3.5 out of 5 stars, with the potential to be higher if the translation improves.
