My Thoughts on Undesirable Marriage
"Undesirable Marriage" promised a rollercoaster of emotions, and it certainly delivered, though perhaps not always in the way I'd hoped. This short novel packs a punch, exploring a marriage fraught with challenges, personal growth, and a healthy dose of heartache.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the straightforward nature of the female lead (FL), Mo Chuan Ya. She knows what she wants and isn't afraid to pursue it, which is a refreshing change of pace. The male lead (ML), Dai Xingren, however, is a bit more complicated. He's a dedicated doctor wrestling with his own internal demons, and his emotional intelligence seems…lacking, to put it mildly. The romance starts quickly, which can be exciting but also sets the stage for potential issues down the road.
What Works Well
I appreciated the realism in the portrayal of their flawed relationship. It's not a fairytale, and they both make mistakes. The FL's strength and decisiveness are admirable, and the ML does eventually demonstrate significant growth, particularly after their separation. The novel explores the complexities of balancing personal desires with professional responsibilities, a theme that resonated with me. I also found the FL's support of the ML's ambitions, even when it meant a long separation, to be quite touching.
Areas of Concern
⚠️ Spoiler Warning ⚠️
Okay, let's address the elephant in the room: the abortion. The ML's decision to consent to the abortion without the FL's explicit consent is a major point of contention, and I can understand why some readers found it unforgivable. While the novel attempts to justify it through his character's past and the FL's health condition, it still feels like a betrayal of trust and bodily autonomy. This event undeniably casts a shadow over their relationship and requires a significant amount of forgiveness from the FL, which some may find unrealistic. The pacing also felt rushed at times, especially in the later stages of the story. I would have liked to see more grovelling from the ML.
Final Verdict
"Undesirable Marriage" is a quick read that evokes a range of emotions. While the problematic elements and rushed pacing prevent me from giving it a higher rating, the FL's strength and the ML's eventual growth kept me engaged. If you're looking for a perfect, squeaky-clean romance, this isn't it. But if you're willing to delve into a flawed, realistic portrayal of marriage with its ups and downs, "Undesirable Marriage" might be worth your time.
