My Thoughts on This Killer Is Easy To Deceive
"This Killer Is Easy To Deceive" is the second book in a series of four, and after diving in, I can see why so many readers found it to be a fun and engaging read. The story follows a charming and bold dancer who also happens to be a secret Imperial Constable, and her interactions with a seemingly cold, but secretly blushing, assassin. It's a light and enjoyable romp through ancient China, and I found myself smiling quite a bit.
First Impressions
Right off the bat, the premise intrigued me. A skilled dancer by day, and a secret constable by night? Paired with a killer who's easily flustered? It's a recipe for comedic gold, and the novel largely delivers on that promise. I was immediately drawn to the strong female lead and the promise of a devoted, if somewhat dense, male lead.
What Works Well
The dynamic between the main characters is definitely the highlight. I loved how the female lead takes initiative, and the male lead, while a deadly assassin, is completely whipped for her. It creates a delightful power dynamic that's both amusing and endearing. Many readers, including myself, appreciate the simple, funny, and straightforward plot. There's no excessive face-slapping or drawn-out misunderstandings, which is a refreshing change of pace. The early romance is also a big plus, and I enjoyed watching their relationship develop. The author does a great job of highlighting the ridiculousness of how quickly they fall for each other, which adds to the overall charm. The "snu-snu" is also left to the imagination, which I found to be a nice touch.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the story, I do have a few minor gripes. The plot is not particularly intricate, and some things are left unexplained by the end. The female lead, while strong, often relies on the male lead's protection, which can undermine her agency at times. Additionally, some might find the female lead's actions a bit reckless.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed concerns about the male lead's past relationships and associations with royalty. One reader was put off by the MC groping her maids. Another reader felt the ending was disappointing due to the ML's association with the prince.
Final Verdict
Overall, "This Killer Is Easy To Deceive" is a delightful and entertaining read. If you're looking for a lighthearted historical romance with a strong female lead and a devoted male lead, I highly recommend giving it a try. Just be aware that the plot is not particularly complex, and there are a few minor issues that might bother some readers. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
