My Thoughts on The Cry of the Phoenix Which Reached the Ninth Heaven
This web novel certainly took me on a rollercoaster! "The Cry of the Phoenix Which Reached the Ninth Heaven" promises a tale of revenge, drama, and romance set against the backdrop of ancient China, and it largely delivers, though with a few caveats that I'll get into.
First Impressions
The initial chapters are gripping, immediately throwing you into a world of cruel betrayals and setting the stage for a satisfying revenge plot. I was immediately invested in the female lead's plight and eager to see her turn the tables on those who wronged her. The setup is reminiscent of other popular revenge stories, like "Princess Wei Yang," but with its own unique spin on the reincarnation trope.
What Works Well
The female lead, Mo Wan, is a major highlight. She's clever, cunning, and absolutely ruthless when it comes to achieving her goals. I particularly enjoyed her ability to act foolish while secretly pulling the strings, a contrast that makes her character both entertaining and formidable. The plot is intricate, filled with twists and turns that kept me guessing. The author does a great job of creating villains you genuinely love to hate, which makes Mo Wan's victories all the more satisfying. Also, I appreciate the unique aspect of the MC reincarnating into her sister's body after death and continuing the story from there.
Areas of Concern
I did find some aspects of the story less appealing. The male lead, while endearing, often feels overshadowed by the strong female lead and the more compelling second male leads. His naivete can be frustrating, and at times, it felt like the author sacrificed his intelligence to highlight the MC's brilliance. Additionally, the length of the novel is a potential drawback. While the plot remains engaging for a good portion, it can start to feel drawn out, with repetitive conflicts and betrayals that lose their impact over time.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers might find the MC's choices controversial, particularly her decision to sleep with the emperor, who was responsible for her previous life's demise. While I understand the strategic reasoning behind this act – using her body as a tool for revenge and gaining power within the palace – it can be a difficult pill to swallow for some.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "The Cry of the Phoenix Which Reached the Ninth Heaven" is an engaging and entertaining read, especially if you're a fan of revenge stories with strong female leads. While the male lead's character and the novel's length might be points of contention, the intricate plot, cunning protagonist, and satisfying moments of retribution make it a worthwhile journey. I'd recommend giving it a try, but be prepared for a long haul and some potentially morally ambiguous choices along the way.
