My Thoughts on Out of the Way, I’m About to Speak
"Out of the Way, I’m About to Speak" is a novel I dove into with a mix of curiosity and trepidation, given its blend of action, comedy, horror, and yaoi. The "unlimited flow" tag piqued my interest, and I'm glad I gave it a shot.
First Impressions
The initial chapters pulled me in with the premise of characters being transported to the Exiled Land, forced to complete missions in dangerous, devourer-created worlds. The stakes felt high, and I was eager to see how the protagonist, Chen Shijin, would navigate this deadly new reality. I was particularly intrigued by the hints of social commentary woven into the narrative.
What Works Well
The novel shines in its creative world-building and the unique challenges presented in each arc. I found the "devourers" and their worlds to be particularly compelling, each reflecting different aspects of human negativity and madness. The author’s ability to tie these fantastical elements to real-life issues like addiction and societal pressures is quite thought-provoking.
Chen Shijin's character development is also a highlight. I appreciate his journey, even though some of his decisions initially struck me as contradictory. His unique abilities and how he learns to utilize them effectively kept me engaged. The side characters are also well-developed, adding depth and complexity to the story.
Areas of Concern
One aspect that I found a bit lacking was the depth of Chen Shijin's thought processes. Sometimes, his actions felt abrupt, leaving me wanting a better understanding of his motivations. This made it harder to fully connect with him and the story at times. Also, while the male lead is present, the romance aspect is more subtle, which might disappoint some readers looking for a central love story.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some arcs delve into sensitive topics, such as the pressures of beauty standards and our reliance on technology. These themes are explored in a way that can be quite unsettling, prompting self-reflection on modern habits and societal norms.
Final Verdict
Despite some minor shortcomings, "Out of the Way, I’m About to Speak" is an engaging and thought-provoking novel. Its unique blend of genres, creative world-building, and exploration of human nature make it a worthwhile read for fans of the "unlimited flow" genre. While the romance might be understated for some, the strong character development and compelling plot kept me invested until the end. I give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
