My Thoughts on Light Beyond (LN)
"Light Beyond (LN)" presents a fascinating premise: a girl named Yuna dies and wakes up in the body of a cruel saint, Celiastina, with only a year to live in this new world. It's a shoujo fantasy with adventure and romance elements, and overall, I found it to be a worthwhile read, though not without its quirks.
First Impressions
I was immediately drawn in by the initial setup. The idea of a protagonist having to grapple with the consequences of someone else's actions, especially when that someone is a reviled figure, is compelling. The early chapters set the stage well, hinting at the mysteries surrounding Celiastina's past and the political and religious complexities of the world.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the depth of character development, and I agree. Yuna's struggle to reconcile her own values with the expectations of her new role felt genuine. I appreciated her kindness and determination to make amends for Celiastina's misdeeds. The author's writing style, as well as the translator's work, was often lauded, and I found the prose to be eloquent and evocative. The world-building, while not entirely unique, was detailed enough to be immersive. The relationships between characters also had a unique charm, and although some felt that the love interests fell for Yuna too quickly, I found their devotion to be endearing.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed Yuna's character, I can understand why some readers found her "naive" and "annoying." There were times when her insistence on doing things her way, despite warnings and potential consequences, felt frustrating. I also noticed several reviewers mentioned her "pure" personality, which bordered on being a Mary Sue. There were also some pacing issues and the ending felt a bit rushed.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some reviewers expressed frustration with Yuna's choices, specifically her decision to free a prisoner who had been tortured by the original Celiastina. While I appreciated her desire to atone for the saint's actions, I can see how this could be seen as reckless and potentially dangerous.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "Light Beyond (LN)" is a touching and thought-provoking story. If you're looking for a shoujo fantasy with a strong female lead, a compelling plot, and a focus on character development, I recommend giving it a try. Just be prepared for moments of frustration with the protagonist's naivete. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars.
