My Thoughts on Soshite Shoujo wa Akujo no Karada o Te ni Ireru
This web novel, with its intriguing title, certainly sparked my curiosity. The premise – a sickly girl reincarnated into the body of a "villainous" one – has a lot of potential. While some readers found it incredibly heartwarming and sweet, others, including myself, had a slightly more mixed reaction.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the concept. A fresh start in a healthy body? Yes, please! The idea of a naive, life-loving protagonist navigating the treacherous waters of high school drama, especially after living a sheltered life, seemed like a recipe for a compelling story. I was ready for a blend of fluff and mystery.
What Works Well
Many readers praised the protagonist's optimistic outlook and found her interactions with other characters genuinely heartwarming. Her determination to make the most of her second chance at life is undeniably endearing. The novel excels at creating a slice-of-life atmosphere, and the slow-burn romance is a plus for those who enjoy that sort of thing. Some have also enjoyed the mystery surrounding the original Aika's suicide, as well as the question of whether she was truly a "villain" or simply misunderstood.
Areas of Concern
However, the protagonist's naivety, while initially charming, can become grating over time. It borders on being unbelievable, even considering her past. I also found myself wanting more depth and complexity, particularly in the supporting characters. The world around the main character feels a bit shallow. While the premise sets up a potentially dark mystery surrounding the original Aika’s life and death, the novel seems hesitant to fully explore those themes.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some of the reviews I looked at mentioned feeling frustrated by the protagonist's reactions to certain characters and situations, particularly her body's "residual" feelings for a certain love interest. Others were disappointed that the story didn't delve deeper into the original Aika's past and the reasons for her actions. There are criticisms about the high school setting feeling unrealistic and that the characters' behavior feels forced and inconsistent.
Final Verdict
Soshite Shoujo wa Akujo no Karada o Te ni Ireru is a decent read if you're looking for something light and fluffy with a touch of mystery. However, if you prefer more complex characters, a nuanced plot, and a protagonist with more agency, you might find yourself wanting more. While it has its moments, it ultimately falls short of its potential. I give it a tentative 3.5 out of 5 stars.
