My Thoughts on I am a Chef in the Modern Era
"I am a Chef in the Modern Era" promised a delightful blend of genres: comedy, fantasy, romance, and slice of life, all centered around a chef from the past navigating the modern culinary world. While the initial concept hooked me, my experience with the novel was a mixed bag.
First Impressions
The premise is undeniably charming. A reverse transmigration, a focus on food, and a budding romance – it's a recipe for success, or so I thought. I was initially drawn in by the idea of an ancient soul finding joy in modern cooking, and the early chapters delivered on that promise with heartwarming interactions and detailed food descriptions.
What Works Well
The beginning of the story shines. The relationships, especially the familial bond between the MC and Old Man Yang, felt genuine and touching. Many readers praised the "fluffy" and "heartwarming" nature of the early chapters, and I agree that the initial slice-of-life elements were well-executed. The translation team also deserves kudos for their work, enhancing the reading experience with food pictures and smooth prose.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progressed, I found myself growing increasingly disappointed. The focus shifted away from cooking, which felt like a betrayal of the title itself. The plot seemed to rush forward, particularly concerning the relationship between the MC and ML. I, along with other readers, felt that major life events, like adopting children, happened too quickly and without sufficient development. The plot threads introduced in the beginning were often left unresolved, and the characters seemed to become less nuanced as the story progressed. The later parts felt like a different story entirely, one that didn't quite live up to the initial potential.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Several readers expressed concerns about the adoption of children and the MC's abandonment of his culinary ambitions. The ease with which the children integrated into the family and the MC's sudden career change to real estate were also points of contention. The fate of Old Man Yang's house and the rushed nature of the MC and ML's relationship were further sources of disappointment.
Final Verdict
While "I am a Chef in the Modern Era" has its moments of charm and fluff, I ultimately found it to be a somewhat unsatisfying read. The initial promise of a food-centric slice-of-life story was overshadowed by rushed plot developments and underdeveloped characters. If you're looking for a light and fluffy read with minimal plot, this might be enjoyable. However, if you're seeking a well-developed story with a focus on culinary arts, you may want to look elsewhere.
