My Thoughts on From Sidekick to Bigshot
"From Sidekick to Bigshot" is quite the ride, clocking in at over 1400 chapters! It's a story that blends drama, romance, and slice-of-life elements, centering around a protagonist who finds herself in a new life with a complex family. Overall, I found it to be an enjoyable, albeit flawed, read.
First Impressions
Initially, I was drawn in by the premise of a reincarnated/transmigrated MC trying to navigate a second chance at life, especially with the promise of doting family members. The early chapters set the stage well, hinting at past conflicts and future possibilities. The idea of an OP MC is always fun, and I was curious to see how Jian Yiling would use her knowledge and skills.
What Works Well
The familial love in this story is definitely a highlight. The MC's relationships with her brothers and cousins are heartwarming, and it's satisfying to see them overcome past misunderstandings. Jian Yiling herself is an interesting character. She's portrayed as having a high IQ but low EQ, which makes her interactions both endearing and sometimes frustrating. I also appreciated that the villains weren't always one-dimensional; they often had understandable motives, adding depth to the overall narrative. The male lead is also a plus, he is said to be very doting to the female lead.
Areas of Concern
Despite its strengths, the novel does have its weaknesses. The sheer length can be a drag, and the plot can become repetitive, falling into a cycle of misunderstandings and face-slapping. Some found the antagonists to become cartoonishly incompetent, and the "Mary Sue" qualities of both the FL and ML could be a bit much at times. Also, the story seems to drag on after chapter 1000, adding unnecessary conflicts and issues.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out issues with the ending, particularly concerning the ML's attitude toward his children. Apparently, he favors his daughter and is distant from his sons, which can be off-putting. The FL also disappears for two years with no explanation.
Final Verdict
"From Sidekick to Bigshot" is a decent read if you're looking for a long, wish-fulfillment story with a focus on family and romance. However, be prepared for some repetitive plotlines and potentially frustrating character traits. I'd recommend it with the caveat that it's best enjoyed as a light, easy read, and that you might want to skim through some of the later chapters. I'd give it a solid 3.5 out of 5 stars.
