My Thoughts on Evil Avalon

Alright, let's dive into "Evil Avalon." I went in with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the mixed buzz I'd seen. Overall, I found it to be a fairly enjoyable read, though not without its quirks.

First Impressions

The initial setup is pretty classic isekai fare: a gamer gets transported into the world of a game he knows well, taking on the role of a mob villain. Familiar, yes, but the execution had me hooked. I appreciated the blend of "trapped in a game" with the "villain redemption" trope. The MC's starting position as the "fat pig simp" outcast definitely provided a good foundation for character growth.

What Works Well

The world-building is a definite highlight. It feels like the author put a lot of thought into the setting, blending modern society with fantasy elements and a class-based academy system. The dungeon exploration and level-up mechanics are also well-developed, making the progression feel satisfying, if a bit grind-heavy at times. I especially liked that the MC isn't instantly overpowered. He faces real limitations due to his social standing, lack of funds, and the need to protect his family. His intelligence and careful planning are his greatest assets, which I found refreshing. I also really enjoyed the family dynamic, especially his relationship with his little sister. It was a unique and heartwarming element that set this novel apart from many others in the genre.

Areas of Concern

One of the biggest criticisms I noticed was the MC's personality. Some found him to be too passive and slow to act, even when his friends or loved ones were being threatened. While I understand the argument that he's playing it safe to avoid attracting unwanted attention, it can be frustrating to watch him get pushed around. Also, while the detailed world-building is usually a strength, it can sometimes lead to pacing issues, with entire chapters dedicated to travel or explanations of game mechanics.

⚠️ Spoiler Warning

Some readers have pointed out that the romance tag is currently misleading, as the MC actively avoids romantic entanglements with the heroines to avoid disrupting the plot. He prioritizes his family and self-improvement, which may disappoint readers looking for a harem story.

Final Verdict

"Evil Avalon" is a decent read with a strong foundation and interesting world-building. The careful, intelligent MC and focus on family relationships are refreshing. However, the slow pacing, occasional translation issues, and the MC's sometimes frustrating passivity might turn some readers off. If you're a fan of isekai with a focus on strategic planning, dungeon crawling, and character growth, this might be worth checking out. Just be prepared for a slow burn and a protagonist who isn't always the most proactive.

Synopsis

The main character loves the MMORPG game called Dungeon Explorer Chronicle (Dun-Ex). During one particular day, a beta test event was announced, and he managed to beat it. In exchange for clearing the event, he was granted permission to try the beta test server. Forcing to choose different avatar and skill as the system doesn’t allow his own, he eventually settled on random. However, he is transferred to a place where, as expected, he finds a fat, villainous mob character…!
