My Thoughts on Didn’t Know General Was Female
"Didn’t Know General Was Female" promised a lighthearted romp, and for the most part, it delivered. It’s not a groundbreaking piece of literature, but it’s a fun, easy read that left me with a smile. If you're looking for something fluffy and entertaining, this might just be your cup of tea.
First Impressions
The premise is definitely intriguing: a woman, Rong Jiahui, gets a second chance at life after a rather undignified death by melon. Armed with the knowledge of her unhappy future, she sets out to woo the returning General, Zhongli Luo, whom she once treated poorly. The twist? The General is a woman in disguise! I was immediately drawn in by the potential for comedic misunderstandings and sweet romance.
What Works Well
The charm of this novel lies in its characters. I found Rong Jiahui's transformation from a somewhat spoiled noblewoman to a determined and loving partner quite endearing. Her headstrong nature and proactive pursuit of Zhongli Luo were refreshing. While some found her immature at times, I appreciated her growth throughout the story. The dynamic between Jiahui and the painfully shy General was also a highlight. Their interactions were often hilarious and heartwarming, making them a very cute couple to root for. The plot, while not overly complex, provides a solid foundation for their relationship to blossom, and the pacing is generally good.
Areas of Concern
I did encounter some issues that held it back from being a top-tier read. Several readers pointed out that the middle portion of the story felt somewhat disjointed, as if the author lost their way for a bit. Additionally, the world-building could have been stronger. It was sometimes difficult to fully visualize the characters and settings, which detracted slightly from the immersive experience. Also, the novel felt a little generic and some readers felt that it didn't carry the yuri theme well.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers expressed strong dislike for the extras and alternate endings, feeling they undermined the satisfying conclusion of the main story. One reader even described the extras as a "train wreck." It might be best to approach those with caution or skip them altogether. The ending was also called a dream by one reader.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Didn’t Know General Was Female" is an enjoyable and lighthearted yuri novel. While it has its flaws, the charming characters, sweet romance, and comedic moments make it a worthwhile read, especially if you're looking for something fun and undemanding. I'd give it a solid 4 out of 5 stars. Just maybe skip the extras.
