My Thoughts on Welcome to the Impregnable Demon King Castle – The Black Sorcerer Is Offered a Seat as a Member of the Demon King Army’s Top Brass After Being Kicked out of the Hero’s Party Because They Didn’t Need Debuffs
First Impressions
Okay, that title is a mouthful! Honestly, I went into this expecting another run-of-the-mill "kicked out of the party" revenge story. And while there are elements of that, it seems to be trying to be something a bit different, a bit more… wholesome, even. The premise is that the MC gets the boot from his hero party because his debuff abilities aren't flashy enough for their entertainment-driven world. He then gets an offer from the Demon King's army. Intriguing, right?
What Works Well
What immediately grabbed me, and what a lot of readers seem to appreciate, is the world-building. The idea of dungeon crawling as a form of entertainment is a fresh take, and it sounds like the author has created a solid magic and combat system. The characters, for the most part, seem to be well-developed and likeable. I'm especially interested in the dynamic between the MC, Lem, and his hero best friend, Fenix. Their rivalry sounds engaging. Many readers praised the writing style, noting a good flow and enjoyable interactions between characters. There is a good amount of world building too.
Areas of Concern
One of the biggest criticisms I've seen revolves around the romance, or lack thereof. The MC is often described as incredibly dense, even to the point of frustration. Some readers feel that the female lead is practically throwing herself at him, and his obliviousness strains believability. Another issue that popped up is the pacing. Some felt that the story moved too slowly, with repetitive exposition dragging down the experience. Some readers felt the MC was too positive after experiencing abuse from his former party.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, proceed with caution, as some spoilers are ahead! Apparently, the MC is hiding his true strength due to a promise to his master and the potentially dangerous nature of his powers. This explains why he doesn't defend himself more often, but it also leads to some frustration among readers who want to see him stand up for himself. There's also some debate about the nature of the relationship between the MC and the vampire lady, Milia. Some find it forced, while others see it as a slow-burn romance that develops over time. Finally the identity of the MC becomes a reveal later on, and some readers thought that it came out of nowhere.
Final Verdict
Overall, "Welcome to the Impregnable Demon King Castle" seems like a decent read with a unique premise and likeable characters. However, the slow pacing, dense MC, and potential for repetitive exposition might turn some readers off. If you're looking for a light-hearted fantasy with a bit of slice-of-life and aren't too concerned about a fast-paced romance, this might be worth checking out. I'd recommend giving it a try and seeing if it clicks with you.
