My Thoughts on I Was Kicked out of the Hero’s Party Because I Wasn’t a True Companion so I Decided to Have a Slow Life at the Frontier
First Impressions
Okay, that title is a mouthful, right? When I first dove into this web novel, I wasn't quite sure what to expect. The premise – a hero's party exile seeking a tranquil life – is fairly common, but something about it intrigued me. I will say that the start is a bit slow, but it does pick up.
What Works Well
One of the strongest aspects of this story is the world-building. It's a fantasy world that feels lived-in and carefully constructed. I found the class system, where individuals are assigned roles and abilities from birth, to be particularly fascinating, and the impact it has on their personalities adds a unique layer. The MC, Red, is also a highlight. He's not your typical overpowered protagonist; he's got insecurities and low self-esteem stemming from his past experiences. Yet, he's competent and uses his knowledge and skills to help others, even if he prefers to remain in the background. It's a refreshing take on the genre. The romance is also surprisingly well-done. Red and his love interest, Rit, develop a sweet and believable connection, and it's nice to see a fantasy novel where the romance isn't a slow burn or a harem situation.
Areas of Concern
I do have a couple of minor gripes. Some readers might find the slice-of-life aspects a bit too slow, and the focus can sometimes shift away from Red and Rit, which can be a little jarring. Also, I can see how the plot might feel a bit "forced" at times, with events conveniently drawing the characters together. The use of flashbacks can also be a bit much.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out that the reason the Hero is a yandere is explained in-universe, making her a sympathetic character. Others have mentioned that Red eventually meets up with his sister.
Final Verdict
Overall, I found I Was Kicked out of the Hero’s Party Because I Wasn’t a True Companion so I Decided to Have a Slow Life at the Frontier to be an enjoyable read. It offers a refreshing take on familiar fantasy tropes, with well-developed characters, a charming romance, and a surprisingly engaging world. While it might not be perfect, it's definitely worth checking out if you're looking for a lighthearted and heartwarming story with a touch of adventure.
