My Thoughts on Tokyo Ravens
"Tokyo Ravens" is a web novel I've been meaning to dive into for a while, drawn in by the combination of action, school life, and supernatural elements. After spending some time exploring the available chapters and digesting the community's thoughts, I've formed a pretty solid opinion.
First Impressions
The premise immediately grabbed me: a world steeped in onmyouji lore, with a protagonist seemingly destined for an ordinary life suddenly thrust into the magical fray. The academy setting adds a familiar comfort, while the hints of romance and mystery promised a layered and engaging story.
What Works Well
The intricate magic system is a definite highlight. I appreciate when authors take the time to build a believable and detailed foundation for their supernatural elements, and "Tokyo Ravens" seems to deliver on this front. The action sequences, fueled by this well-defined magic, sound exciting and engaging, making each battle feel significant. Also, the plot moves along at a decent clip and keeps my attention.
Areas of Concern
However, I have some reservations. The biggest recurring criticism revolves around the characters, particularly the female lead, Natsume, and her relationship with the protagonist, Harutora. Several readers have expressed frustration with what they perceive as manipulative and even abusive behavior from Natsume towards Harutora. The dynamic, particularly the childhood promise of servitude and the use of a shikigami double life, seems to create a toxic power imbalance that detracts from the story. I can see how this could be a major turn-off for some readers.
Another point of concern for some is the MC, Harutora, is that he can be a bit dense or flat as a character. This lack of depth can make it difficult to connect with him, which is a shame because a strong protagonist is crucial for a story like this. The handling of death and resurrection also seems to be an issue, potentially cheapening the emotional impact of significant events.
