My Thoughts on The Wizard Raised Through TRPG is Still the Strongest in the Other World
First Impressions
Alright, so I dove into "The Wizard Raised Through TRPG is Still the Strongest in the Other World" with a mix of excitement and trepidation. The title is a mouthful, but it promises a power fantasy with a twist. The premise, a salaryman reincarnated as a maxed-out wizard from a TRPG, is intriguing, and I was curious to see how the author would handle it. I went in hoping for some good world-building and a protagonist who, despite being overpowered, still faced interesting challenges.
What Works Well
I found myself appreciating the unique magic system. The D&D-style wizardry, with its daily spell limits and the need to recharge, is a refreshing change from the typical endless mana reserves you often see. It creates a sense of limitation that, in theory, should lead to strategic thinking. The world-building is also a strong point, with hints of mystery surrounding certain elements that kept me wanting to know more. I also liked the idea that he had weaknesses that needed to be covered by allies. Some readers appreciated the slow pacing, finding the world and characters well-developed and the plot intriguing.
Areas of Concern
My biggest issue, and it seems I'm not alone here, is the main character. While I can appreciate a protagonist who isn't a bloodthirsty maniac, Gio often comes across as a doormat. His past life as a Japanese salaryman seems to be used as an excuse for him to be overly timid and indecisive. Many felt his inability to assert himself, even when faced with blatant disrespect or danger, was frustrating. This passivity makes it hard to root for him, even with all his power. Some found the plot to be somewhat bland and lacking in compelling storylines or political intrigue.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have pointed out specific instances where Gio's passivity leads to questionable decisions. For example, his choice to let bandits go free after they attempted to harm him, only for them to potentially cause more harm later, felt illogical. His acceptance of being railroaded into responsibilities by the Order without being consulted also rubbed some people the wrong way.
Final Verdict
"The Wizard Raised Through TRPG is Still the Strongest in the Other World" has potential. The magic system and world-building offer a solid foundation, but the main character's personality is a significant hurdle. If you can tolerate a protagonist who is more reactive than proactive, you might find enjoyment here. However, if you prefer your overpowered characters to have a bit more backbone, this might not be the novel for you. I'm giving it a tentative 3/5. I'm hoping the MC will develop more of a spine as the story progresses.
