My Thoughts on The Villainous Marshal’s Little Mermaid is Reborn
I recently finished "The Villainous Marshal’s Little Mermaid is Reborn," and I have some thoughts! Overall, it was an enjoyable read, but it definitely had its ups and downs.
First Impressions
Going in, I was expecting something a little more on the fluffy side, based on the description. While there are definitely cute and sweet moments between the MC and ML, the story is surprisingly plot-heavy, with an interstellar setting and some interesting sci-fi elements. If you're looking for a purely lighthearted read, be prepared for a bit more substance than you might anticipate.
What Works Well
The core of the novel, for me, was the relationship between the mermaid MC and the Marshal ML. Their interactions are genuinely heartwarming, and I appreciated the author's choice to include a language barrier early on, making their connection feel more earned and unique. I also liked that the ML wasn't overly controlling; he respected the MC's autonomy and decisions, which is always a plus in my book. The world-building, with its interstellar setting and hints of a larger mermaid society, was also intriguing and kept me invested in the story. It’s easy to get attached to the characters.
Areas of Concern
While I enjoyed the overall plot, I have to agree with some readers who felt the ending was a bit rushed. Several plot threads, like the MC's search for his parents and the circumstances surrounding the ML's mother's disappearance, felt unresolved. The conclusion of the main antagonist's arc also felt somewhat anticlimactic, happening off-screen and summarized in a few lines. The timeline can also be quite confusing.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Proceed with caution; the following contains potential spoilers regarding plot details.
There are some issues with the timeline. Readers may become confused due to the research proposal of the experiments proposed 20 years ago, yet the ML’s flashback says it happened a week ago, 14 years ago. The vision MC had with his late mother is never brought up again.
Final Verdict
Despite its flaws, "The Villainous Marshal’s Little Mermaid is Reborn" is a decent read, especially if you enjoy interstellar settings, sweet romances, and don't mind a slightly rushed ending. While it might not be a novel I'll revisit anytime soon, I appreciated the unique elements and the endearing relationship between the main characters. I'd recommend it with the caveat that you should be prepared for a more plot-driven story than the initial description might suggest.
