My Thoughts on The Villain that Reincarnated into the World of a BL Game goes Astray
"The Villain that Reincarnated into the World of a BL Game goes Astray" certainly had an intriguing premise, and I jumped in hoping for a clever subversion of the reincarnation and BL tropes. While it had its moments, my overall experience was a mixed bag.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The first few chapters promised a protagonist with agency and a clear understanding of the game's villainous role he was now occupying. This set the stage for what I hoped would be a story of strategic maneuvering and self-preservation within a dangerous game world. I was ready for a fun ride.
What Works Well
The translation is undeniably well-done, making the reading experience smooth and enjoyable. The author does try to add some serious themes, such as dealing with a difficult father and the political machinations of the aristocracy. Some readers enjoyed the fluffy, lighthearted moments, particularly the cute interactions between the MC and the ML. It seemed like the series really resonated with readers looking for a soft BL harem situation with not too many serious or dark themes.
Areas of Concern
Unfortunately, the initial promise faded pretty quickly for me. The MC's personality seemed to undergo a drastic shift, transforming from a seemingly strong-willed individual into someone overly reliant on others, prone to crying, and generally lacking in common sense. I found it hard to reconcile this with the character I was introduced to in the beginning. This was a common sentiment, with several readers expressing disappointment in the MC's perceived lack of agency and development.
The plot also felt somewhat disjointed and lacked a clear direction, making it difficult to stay invested in the long run. It seemed like potentially interesting conflicts were introduced only to be resolved in unsatisfying ways, hindering character growth and overall plot progression. I started to find the relationships and plot points to be confusing and inconsistent, and the characters were too flat to hold my interest.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Okay, things get a little weird here. Apparently, the MC's father's abuse is blamed on the king and the MC's mother, which I found to be in poor taste. Also, later in the novel, the MC asks the king to sleep with his father as retribution for the abuse. A lot of readers were confused by this development.
Final Verdict
Ultimately, "The Villain that Reincarnated into the World of a BL Game goes Astray" didn't quite live up to its initial potential for me. While it offers some lighthearted fluff and a well-executed translation, the inconsistencies in character development and plot made it a difficult read. If you're seeking a low-stakes, fluffy BL with a cute protagonist, this might be worth a try. However, if you're looking for a more complex and engaging narrative with well-developed characters, I'd suggest exploring other options.
