My Thoughts on The Legend of Futian
"The Legend of Futian" is a web novel that I dove into with a mix of excitement and trepidation, given the mixed reactions I'd seen. It's a xuanhuan story with a healthy dose of action, adventure, and more than a sprinkle of romance, so right up my alley... usually.
First Impressions
Initially, I was hooked. The early chapters introduce Ye Futian, a charismatic protagonist who, despite some early setbacks, quickly finds himself surrounded by opportunities. I appreciated the author's attempt to create a loving family dynamic for the MC, a refreshing change from the often cutthroat beginnings in similar novels. The budding romance was also pretty cute, capturing that awkwardness of first love.
What Works Well
What kept me reading was the world-building. It's not groundbreaking, but it's solid enough to keep you invested. I found the concept of Natal Spirits and their influence on cultivation intriguing. The brotherhood between Ye Futian and his close companions, particularly Yu Sheng, is a highlight. Their bond feels genuine, and their interactions are some of the most enjoyable parts of the story. I also like the MC's personality. He can be arrogant, but it's often justifiable, and he has a witty charm that makes him likeable, even when he's stirring up trouble.
Areas of Concern
However, as the story progresses, some issues begin to surface. The plot becomes increasingly repetitive, following a predictable pattern of encountering stronger opponents, powering up, and moving to a new realm. This cycle can get tiresome, and the constant introduction of new geniuses, only to be surpassed by even greater ones, feels contrived after a while. The "romance" also becomes a bit of a sticking point. While the initial relationship is well-developed, the author seems hesitant to fully commit to a harem or a strictly monogamous route, leading to some awkward flirtations and unfulfilled potential. And while I did enjoy the beginning, the MC starts to come across as a Gary Sue, a character with almost no flaws, and the world seems designed to specifically cater to his needs.
⚠️ Spoiler Warning
Some readers have expressed frustration with the author's handling of character development, particularly concerning Ye Futian's shift in attitude towards his enemies. The MC, once a decisive and proactive character, becomes increasingly lenient, which some find inconsistent with his earlier actions. Also, the introduction of a potential harem situation later in the story has disappointed some readers who appreciated the initial focus on a single, well-developed romance.
Final Verdict
Overall, "The Legend of Futian" is an average web novel. It has moments of brilliance, particularly in its character interactions and early world-building, but it ultimately falls victim to repetitive plotlines and inconsistent character development. If you're looking for a lighthearted cultivation story with a focus on relationships, it might be worth a try. However, be prepared for a potentially frustrating experience if you're seeking a truly unique or groundbreaking narrative. I'd give it a 3/5.
